When does the School Nurse perform head lice screenings?
At the beginning of the school year, mass screenings are performed at each grade level. Students and staff are given health education regarding the strategies that can be utilized to prevent the incidence and transmission of head lice. During the course of the school year additional screenings will be conducted if new cases are suspected or identified.

Mass screenings throughout the year are not advised by the Rhode Island (RI) Department of Health or by the RI School Health Service Guidelines provided by the school physician. It is important for families to inform the School Nurse if their child is affected, or if they require information or guidance. This action can assist the School Nurse Teacher’s efforts to monitor for lice among our students, resulting in prompt intervention.
