Property, Building, Zoning & Taxes

The Planning Department is available to assist with understanding the rules and regulations that may apply to your property.  The department also administers applications and plan reviews for the following Boards and Commissions:

  • Historic District Commission reviews new construction, building additions, modifications and alterations, fences, and accessory structures on property located in East Greenwich's Historic Districts and other properties regulated by Historic zoning.
  • Zoning Board of Review for granting Dimensional Variances, Special Use Permits, and Use Variances.
  • Planning Board for approvals of subdivisions of land and land development projects, and for recommendations to the Town Council on all proposed zoning amendments and amendments to the Comprehensive Community Plan.
  • Land Trust for the preservation of open space, agricultureal land, and land with significant environmental, historical, and cultural resources. Click here to visit the Land Trust webpage.

It is the Department's responsibility to ensure compliance with state Planning and Land Development related laws like those relating to the Zoning Ordinance and Map remaining consistent with the Comprehensive Community Plan and Future Land Use Map.

The Planning Department is located in Town Hall, 125 Main Street.

Building permits are very valuable to you and your community. By working with the local Code Officials, you will benefit from their knowledge and be confident your project is completed according to applicable building codes. By following code requirements, the completed project will meet minimum standards for safety and will be less likely to cause loss or injury to you and/or the public.

Permits are typically required for:

  • New Buildings (construction of)
  • Additions (bedrooms, bathrooms, family rooms, etc.)
  • Residential work (decks, garages, pools, fireplaces, etc.)
  • Renovations (garage conversions, finishing a basement, kitchen remodels, re-roofing, siding, etc.)
  • Change of use or occupancy of existing building
  • All Electrical installations and modifications
  • All Plumbing installations and modifications
  •  HVAC (heating, ventilation and air-conditioning) systems

Tax Payments

Taxes are due on September 1, December 1, March 1, and June 1 of each year, with interest being applied after a 10 day grace period.  Payments must be in the office by the 10th day.  Post marks are no longer accepted.  Interest is calculated at one percent per month from the last due date.

Payments can be made in person in the Finance Office of Town Hall at 125 Main Street, East Greenwich, RI 02818 between 8:30am and 4:30pm Monday through Friday. 

Payments can be mailed to PO Box 150436 Hartford, CT 06115-0436. Please include your quater bill stub.

 

 
Official Payments  

Official Payments web site allows you to pay your sewer assessment, sewer use or tax bill on-line. There is a small fee that you will be charged for this service.

For questions regarding tax payments, please call 886-8612 [prompt #1].

The Finance Department also processes Municipal Lien Certificates. The fee is $25.00 plus either a stamped self-addressed envelope, or $.46.

Tax Assessments

The Assessment Division is a part of the Finance Department. The division is responsible for the valuation of all property in town. The assessor's office also is responsible for the recording and maintenance of all personal exemptions available to the taxpayers.

Information is available to regarding all properties in the office.  The last Statistical Revaluation was completed 12/31/2011 for the 2012, 2013, & 2014 tax bills.

 All subsequent assessments reflect values as of that date.
